Critters With Morning Coffee 7/27/12 – By Jesse Sykes

When I was a child, a friend and I found two baby field mice. We promptly named them “Pudding” and “Pie”… Their eyes were still closed, and they weren’t much bigger then a thumb nail. We tried to save them of course, but they died. I remember when they died, it was pouring rain, and night time, but it didn’t matter to us. We placed them together in a match box, went outside with a big tablespoon, and dug a little hole in the muddy dirt of her mom’s garden-and we cried…then we would laugh at the sight of each other crying- then cry again. This went on for awhile!! We were about 7. Man, I love that memory-cherish it. My own family’s house had an animal grave that rivaled Arlington Cemetery. I even buried insects… I would have these elaborate funerals for all! I’ve always wondered if the people who live there now, find the little chandelier light bulb boxes that many a fish, mouse, or hamster was buried in. They would find many larger boxes as well if they dug deep enough-beloved dogs, cats, kittens, guinea pigs, and rabbits…. Of course all these animals are still alive in my heart. J.S xo
