Tuesday eating from your yard tip: Green Tomatoes, by Jill Kuhel

Tuesday eating from your yard tip~as temperatures dip the question is what to do with the green tomatoes? Engage hive mind for the answer. Of course we all think of southern fried green tomatoes. Marie Kuhel suggested pickled green tomatoes~my coworker from Texas suggested adding some carrots, onions and hot peppers to the tomato pickles. He also said his aunt made green tomato tarts. They must have more green tomatoes in the south. Robin Heilman Davenport shared her grandma’s relish with green tomatoes recipe. Judy Reid sent me her green tomato bread recipe. I listed these recipes below. Rob McEntarffer suggested green tomato chutney. Sarah Freudenburg made Mexican verde sauce with green tomatoes in place of tomatillos. Dianne Buelow made mincemeat with green tomatoes. Some people wrap the green tomatoes in newspaper to ripen them. I just have them in a box in the basement. The tomatoes ripen at different times, so check them occasionally to pull out the red tomatoes. Some years I have had tomatoes ripening until December. How do you eat your green tomatoes?
