Jamaica Day 8: My First Show in Jamaica, by Davin Michael Stedman

I am pretty excited about the risk we’re taking at my first show in Jamaica. We’re closing with a Mento song that we turned into a full on Rock Song.

This band is two Jamaican cops and this Jamaican drummer that is the in the pocket reincarnation of Keith Moon.

…and a Budtender from Seattle.

If we nail this song it’s a WRAP. It’s so good as a closer. The opener Funky Kingston is going come out and hit people like Mike Tyson in the first round. I posted it. We brought it.

Jamaicans want Rock & Roll but it has to be good.

Let’s roll the dice. Because that’s how I got here. I ain’t scurred.

Mark Wonder was looking at us…

“You guys are playing a rock song”

….with a mix of horror, admiration and fascination.

I start the song as a little mento song through the first chorus, then I stop it like the end of ‘Natural’. Then I might go full on preacher if I feel it and talk about some real sh☆t.

…as I quietly count 1,2,3,4 to Ackeme.

I know we are holding a grenade that could go off in our face. But if we hit this…

I am dropping the mic.

It’s not like I haven’t done this before but to try to turn a group of people I didn’t know Sunday into my band on a Saturday is an achievement and a challenge.
