King – S**t Show

Danish pop sensation KING’s new record ‘S**t Show’ is sultry, tongue-in-cheek and instantly infectious: a kaleidoscopic neo-soul anthem to kick start your 2019.

Produced by Berkay Birecikli aka VOID – whose credits include work with FKA Twigs and Lana del Rey – S**t Show creeps up on you. Starting with sparse chords and stripped back drums, KING’S breathy vocal soon takes centre stage with lyrics that are at once powerfully independent and self-depreciating. And then, out of nowhere, it transforms completely via filtered broken beats and rave-inspired synth stabs for a finale that walks the line between uplifting and poignant.

“’S**t Show’ is about how I’m such a loser but I still feel super-cool at the same time,” says King, “I feel like a lot of music right now is sounding too forced and I don’t want to be a part of that scene. When we sat down VOID and I didn’t have any references: it was just fun, playful and effortless. The video was easy to create. Tajana (from London but lives in LA) has her own style and I wanted her touch on this video. I felt like doing something with a lot of humour, since pretty much every music video nowadays is so fucking serious. I’m pushing the boundaries with what I’m doing: I’d rather end up a failing original than a successful copycat”.

Gritty and rebellious, KING makes nuanced and mature pop music with genuine emotional heft. Born in Copenhagen in 1990 to a Cuban mother and a Chilean father, at 11 she began honing her performance skills by dancing with local street dance outfits and quickly joined a Copenhagen urban dance academy and by 15 she was earning her living as a dance teacher.

KING first announced herself on the world stage in summer 2016 with the release of debut single ‘Promise’. Since then, she has released a steady stream of head-turning singles, picking up support from a wide selection of tastemakers including The Line Of Best Fit, Mr Suicide Sheep, Wonderland and The 405, who described Promise as “one of the biggest debuts of the year”.

S**t Show is the first single to be released from KING’s forthcoming debut EP. A further single will drop in March, with the EP scheduled for release late April.
