Standing Before Kings – Saint Helena, by Michael Hukin

You know what two of my favourite subjects are? Music and history. In 1815, the great French Emperor Napoleon was exiled to St. Helena in the south Atlantic by the British. It is said they deliberately put him in terrible conditions in an attempt to hasten his death. Napoleon died on St. Helena in 1821, his last words reportedly being ‘France, l’armée, tête d’armée, Joséphine’ (‘France, the army, head of the army, Joséphine’)

I consider Napoleon one of the most fascinating characters from our past. Now, imagine two young Russian gentlemen named Aleksey And Rocky being so interested in the whole saga that they actually write a song called ‘St. Helena.’ And imagine that song is really, really good. Because it is. It’s as if it appeared from the 80’s, something you missed growing up, back when music was still, you know, great. You could put it on a mix tape with OMD and the Pet Shop Boys and it wouldn’t sound out of place at all. The band is called Standing Before Kings and is based in LA now. Listen to this track! You’ll be happy you did.
