Countdown to Ian Hunter’s 85th Birthday: Ian Misunderstands His Adopted Country on “Gun Control”

“Gun Control” (below) is a perfectly lovely and persuasive song and I applaud Ian Hunter for writing, recording and releasing the tune on his 1981 album Short back ‘n’ sides. The UK born Hunter does seem to express in these lyrics a belief that American commercial interests and lobbyists are the most effective opponents of gun control. This is not entirely correct.

Gun Control measures fail in the US, not just because they impinge profits, but mostly because they infringe religious beliefs. Americans worship their firearms as they worship God and Donald Trump, with prayerful hands clasped and checkbooks generously open.

The photo above was taken in supposedly woke East Portland, today, April 12, 2024. Far from something dangerous, PDX residents view guns as forming one third of a holy trinity defending them against whatever scary stuff is out there.
