Metal Dubstep – A New Musical Direction: VASTIVE Live at Lost Lands 2023, by Mark Erickson

When I saw dubstep live at Lollapalooza the acts relied far too much on a repetitive, thumping bass. I had the same impression of nearly all I heard when in the presence of son #2. However, Griz has potential. Then I heard Nanostorm (on Third Dimension) on WNUR! Nanostorm connected with my metalhead sensibilities while adding samples, fills, and tempo changes, and an overall question of direction. I recently came across this crazy stuff below performed by VASTIVE!

Metal fans do not care about your sex or race. We respect each other and our common adoration for the music. Look at Vastive’s multicultural audience! And they definitely head bang just as if they were in a holy house worshipping Meshuggah, Opeth, or Slayer. If you are turned off by the youtube clip, and I would fully understand why, you will not hear the DJ shout, “Where are the f**kin’ metalheads!?” Later, it is, “Where are the f**kin’ headbangers!?”

VASTIVE has taken generic dubstep into a new realm that grabbed this old man’s attention! Not de-evolution, but evolution. Snap your fingers, snap your neck. Thank you!!
