For The Players: A Look At Sports Where Participation Is Far Better Than Spectating

Sports fans love to play. And they love to watch too.

There are certainly plenty of activities where the latter option is better. Watching the Kansas City Chiefs appeals more than taking a sack. John Cena and co. can keep the bumps of sports entertainment to themselves. And watching hockey from the cheap seats has gotta be better than being on the ice.

At a time when a lack of movement is a major problem – not least after the pandemic – participation is key. Here are four of the best sports where playing is the answer.

Baseball

Baseball viewing figures have fallen by around 2/3rds in the past 30 years. However, participation is still high with over 15 million participants across the land.

The old bat and ball has evolved and remains a popular sport with its core audience. Likewise, it retains a special place in the nation’s sporting identity. Still, the feeling of hitting a home run simply cannot be matched in anything you do as a spectator. Even seeing your team win in the bottom of the ninth.

Besides, the average mid-season MLS game is unlikely to be remembered. That game – including softball – played with friends is one you’ll remember forever.

Paintballing

Team shooting sports aren’t something that many people would pay to watch. On the other hand, paintball is one that most people would love to play.

Participation numbers have fallen a little. Still, there is still a legion of regular players that enjoy weekly or fortnightly matches. A ballistic vest and suitable footwear can help reduce injury risks. This allows players to enjoy frequent participation without disrupting their lives. A personal paintball gun is another very popular choice.

The adrenaline of playing paintball is arguably greater than that felt in other sports. The only way is to play.

Fishing

Recreational fishing is one of the most popular participation sports of all. Spectating, on the other hand, is very much a niche. Frankly, it’s not hard to see why.

You can appreciate the beauty of fish as a spectator, but there’s nothing like seeing it up close. Similarly, the fight to land the big fish is far more enjoyable when you’re involved. There’s also a lot of joy to be gained from building your setup. Poles, reels, tackle, and bait all have a key role to play. It’s a sport and an art rolled into one.

Whether alone or with friends, for enjoyment or in a tournament doesn’t matter. You’ll find many participants that never spectate.

Pool

Watching a quick TikTok of trick shots is something most pool fans will experience. Still, cue sports are far more enjoyable when they are played. Outside of the Mosconi Cup, it’s unlikely that you’d ever watch a televised event.

On the contrary, virtually everyone has picked up a cue at some stage. It’s the ultimate casual sport on a night out that can be played by virtually anyone. Finding a local pool hall shouldn’t be difficult in any part of the country. And skilled players could probably give anyone a run for their money on their day.

Besides, a sport that can be enjoyed with a cold beer has to be a winner in our minds. Now and for many years to come.
