The Biggest Golf Course in the Country and Improvement to Smaller Courses: Golf in East Portland, by Jennifer Kirwan

Oregon might not be one of the top states for golfing in terms of how many courses there are, nor for the number of golfing pros that call this part of the world home. But, what East Portland and the surrounding regions do have is some of the most impressive golf courses in the country. The government has been working hard to build up golfing culture in Oregon, and this is seen in the work they are doing on public golf courses around the state and in the city of Portland.

Love For Golf Is Increasing As Portland Looks To Capitalize

Golf has never been one of the most popular sports in the United States, with NASCAR, football and basketball stealing the limelight over the past two decades. However, since 2020, there has been something of a shift, as the popularity of golf has been surging in the country. Since 2020, golfing popularity has increased in every single metric.

The number of golf players in the United States has been increasing by around 3% every year since 2020 – the largest net increase in the past 17 years. In the United States there are an estimated 25 million golfers. Oregon, and East Portland in particular, has been described as perfect for golf, and the state is looking to capitalize on this recent surge in the sport’s popularity by continually improving its courses.

Oregon – Home To America’s Only 32-Hole Golfing Facility

One of the most impressive courses in the state is a 30 minute drive east from downtown Oregon in Troutdale, and is the only course in the country to feature 32-holes. The facility is located at McMenamin’s Edgefield Hotel and is split into two different courses– one 12-hole course and one 20-hole course. The course has been described as the “funkiest golfing facility in the country”, as in addition to the vast number of holes playable, golfers can enjoy a visit to the on-course pub after totaling their scores.

One of the factors that makes golf such a beloved pastime around the world is the community aspect of it. Players appreciate the time they can spend conversing on the course and adding amenities such as a pub make this social and community aspect even more enjoyable.

Municipal Improvement to Courses Key to Growth of Golf in Portland

Golf Digest recently reported on the municipal work that’s taking place in Portland to improve the structure and facilities at local golf courses. In an attempt to improve golfing infrastructure and increase interest in the sport in Portland, the city municipality has been working on the Lake Oswego golf course, downsizing the number of holes but improving the overall quality of the course.

Many professional golfers would back this trade-off, claiming that in golf, quality is more important than quantity. Moves like this are sure to impress golfers around the country and will certainly go a long way toward boosting popularity ratings for the sport.
