Carrie Fischer and Paul Simon, by Davin Michael Stedman

A few things about this Paul Simon biography have been tripping me out in some wonderful ways. Such as how that moment when millions of boys like me were falling in love Princess Leia, she was making up and breaking up with Paul Simon.

She haunts Graceland. She was going to leave him for Dan Akroyd during Blues Brothers. They had rings picked out. But she went back to Simon.

She went back to him 100 times. She left him 100 times.

She hooked up with Han Solo. Carrie Fischer was living a pretty darn exciting life when I was 4 years old watching Return of The Jedi hitting puberty watching the coolest girl I had ever seen killing aliens and faceless Imperial soldiers.

She also implied in the book that it didn’t work out because she was super duper high. Simon was kind of a square. Cocaine is a powerful drug.

But gee Paul Simon, you got The Princess. She was crushing on him as a teenager having sang ‘Bridge over Troubled Water’ in her mother Debbie Reynolds’ cabaret show.

She loved the songs about her that might have broke her heart, but damn it they were good songs she thought, so she was flattered.

A good book puts life into hyper focus and helps us see the bigger picture. Also empathy. Literature feeds us empathy.

My childhood feels like a galaxy far far away…

The morale of this story, is if you write good songs, good things could happen. You might get to party with a Princess…and Rick James.
