1.Lockers

No matter how much your employees trust each other, leaving purses and other valuables in a common area is never a wise idea. By providing lockers for your employees, and requiring their use, you are taking one step towards eliminating theft from your professional office.

2.Electronic Devices

Any electronic devices in your office should be engraved with some type of identifier. The identifier that you choose is up to you, but should make it clear who the items belong to. While engraving your items will not necessarily prevent theft, it will make an employee think twice about removing it from the office. Additionally, having an identifier on your electronics will make it easier to prove that they are yours should they be located by law enforcement.

3.Keep Records

If your employees know that you have no idea what’s in your office, they may be more tempted to steal from you. Each time you purchase a new piece of office equipment, write down the serial number or enter it onto a spreadsheet. Make sure that your list of serial numbers is kept in a secure safe or locked drawer. Leaving these numbers lying about makes it easy for a nefarious employee to switch a few numbers in order to steal from you undetected.

4.Badges

Every employee should be required to wear a name badge. If you have a larger business, your employees’ name badges should include their photo. This can help to prevent strangers from walking through your office, picking and choosing what they would like to make their own. Name badges don’t have to be fancy and, in fact, you can easily make them on your computer if you choose to do so.

Cameras can be easily purchased at any office store and at many home improvement stores. Security cameras are easy to install and can be up and running within a day. Cameras are a fantastic theft deterrent in professional offices. Recording the video is always the best idea but, if you choose not to record, don’t let your employees know this. If a dishonest employee knows that you aren’t recording his or her activities, your cameras will essentially have been a waste of money.

Because people spend so much time at work, it’s easy to get overly comfortable. No one wants to think that they are working with a thief, but it does happen.
