A Stray Thought About Song Usage in Political Campaigns, By Peter Blackstock

We seem to hear every so often about artists who object to their songs being used by a GOP candidate (Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Heart, Jackson Browne, Rage Against The Machine, etc.), but I’m not aware of an instance where an artist objected to their song being used by a Democratic candidate.

The initial impluse is chalk it up to predominantly liberal leanings in the entertainment biz — but it’s not like there aren’t also musicians who are more than happy to have their songs used by GOP candidates (Hank Jr., Ted Nugent, Charlie Daniels, Kid Rock, Toby Keith). Being a musician, as a conservative musician in my family correctly notes, does not by any means automatically equate to being liberal.

So what causes this GOP/Dem imbalance regarding artist objections to song-usage?
