Three Hours with D.A. Pennebaker, By Pat Thomas

The Monterey Pop Festival was 45 years ago this weekend! [The trailer for DA Pennebaker’s documentary of the event is below.] In the early 90’s, I was living in Bonn, Germany and went to my local neighborhood theater for a screening of Pennebaker’s (then new) movie “War Room” about the Bill Clinton election campaign. [Trailer for this film is also below.] Pennebaker was in the audience! There was only about 10 people there and after the movie, he said, “I’m going next door for a drink – anyone want to join me?” – the only person who did was me and Katherine Starzel, we followed him over and proceed to have a 3 hour discussion him and his partner Chris Hegedus about Dylan (of course!), Victoria Williams, Eric Andersen, Fairport Convention and a whole lot more.

Pat Thomas is the author of the recently released work, Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975
