Coldplay – “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)” – Live May 4, 2012, By Gary Heffern

As I have posted many times, I usually don’t “get” Coldplay. I find their music pretty boring, and they just don’t do it for me, but I will stand here now and say that they earned respect today from me. This is just one of the most beautiful songs and so well done, chilling and perfect, and such a humbling tribute to Adam Yauch.

I feel really, really old. I remember going to have drinks with Susan Silver and the manager of the Beastie Boys as they were getting ready to open for Madonna on her first tour. The manager was in Seattle for about a week prior to the show at the Paramount. No one knew who the BB’s were as their first video hadn’t come out. Susan and I were friends and a couple of times that week she invited me to come down to meet with her and their manager. He was total New York hyper-active and talked faster and more than even I do. I think Susan was learning as much as she could from him, as she was just getting ready to or had already started her management company which would go on to include Soundgarden, Alice in Chains. She helped me put on, and came to, practically every show and poetry reading I did. She later married Chris Cornell, to whom I had given her phone number. But back to the Beasties, so sorry for the loss. They did a lot more than just rap. They gave consciousness about Tibet. I get goosebumps just thinking about that. When people use their fame or fortune to help awareness and create change for the positive and help others, that’s what it is all about. Thank you Adam. Bless your little punk rock soul. much love.
