Ronald Shannon Jackson live in 83! Plus: Patti Smith as you’ve never seen her! By Marc Marshall and Tom Kipp

Hey Tom, check this out. Pretty lively sounding, no?

Bob Burnett saw them at that small club across from the old DC Tower Records – cant remember the name of it, it was only open a short time.

Hi Marc:

Weird how Vernon Reid is always so damned stiff and noncommittal, like he was Bill Wyman or something, not a Guitar God. I thought playing post-Hendrix electric lead guitar was supposed to be great fun!

Anyhow, wish I’d seen Shannon Jackson at some point, whether with his Decoding Society or as an essential element in the incomparable Last Exit. Oh well, at least there’s YouTube [and bootleg dvds!].

By the by, via the on-line CRAWDADDY! this morning I finally got to see a bit of footage I’d read about nearly THIRTY years ago, in the first Christgau record guide. Just when you thought Patti Smith couldn’t surprise you yet again, here she is, on ABC’s KIDS ARE PEOPLE TOO in 1979, just before WAVE [and retirement]:

As she once said, at heart she’s An American Artist, perhaps the MOST American of our time!

Enjoy,
