Ian Hunter, Best Rocker of the 21st Century, by Ron Swanson

.

I just had the thought, now that I’ve had some time to digest Ian Hunter’s release from last year, that Ian Hunter is probably my favorite for best rocker of the 21st Century. Who’d’ve thunk it? All three of his releases this decade have been way above average and OK, if I want to really make a statement like that I’d have to listen to other bands (My Morning Jacket is a close second:) as well. When I ordered Hunter’s 2009 “Man Overboard”, I also ordered what has to be at least my 5th copy of his 2001 release “Rant”. I know I gave two away, wore one out, and lost or had stolen a 4th. This is the 1st time I’ve had the UK release, which has a different song order. “Rant” is still probably the best single effort of his career for strength of songs top to bottom in my opinion.

Not sure if this link will work for listening or not, (if not, just click on the vidsky above) but this is the song I’d be interested to hear your take on (all three million of you) from the new one:

It’s both solid Ian Hunter and somehow different. Strikes me as a Beatles/Kinks at their best hybrid. Kind of a McCartney melody with Davies lyrics/sensibilities or some such.

Must have been the bouzuki. 🙂
