How deeply God can get his hooks into a Christian, by Karla Chase

It is hard to explain how deeply God can get his hooks into a Christian. Believe me there are times I’d rather not attend the “fancy sewing circle” which some people believe church to be.

Why is God a self absorbed deity? At least the God as he is potrayed in the Bible? Is it because he expects a lot of his followers? We can never totally appease(or please) God. At least not in the Christian tradition of believing we are saved by grace. That’s just the point.

If a Christian believes they are saved by grace and will go to heaven, I guess they can go through their whole lives doing nothing but being a decent loving human being. For most of us Christians that would be a noble task in itself and should be the focus of a Christian’s life.

But Christ pushes us to try and accomplish other things as well. Christians disagree on if you can be once saved/ always saved (if you become a Christian for instance and go back to living in the old ways or do nothing with your faith all your life).

It’s a good question, though. Why bother with all this stuff? Why put yourself out there? And being a decent loving person does encapsulate the Christ’s greatest commandments of “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and love your neighbor as yourself.”

All I can say is that God pushes us to do things for him. Not in a cruel way, but in a relational sort of way.
