The Original Concept of the Public Servant is Dead, by Thomas Paine

by Thomas Paine

Retiring Indiana Senator Evan Bayh is right on. The original concept of the public servant is dead. All we are left with is career politicians whose only ambition is to either hold their office forever or seek higher ones. There is no difference between Republicans and Democrats. In addition to voting out the incumbants we need new parties. Go Libertarian, Green, Fascist, Pro-Life, Pro-Death, Socialist, Independent or Whig – anything but Republican or Democrat.

And let’s elect people who will debate bills and laws on their merits, economic/social costs/benefits, not on the pork for their constituents. Finally, politicians need to start cooperating with the victors, not threatening filibusters and undermining the winning regimes. If the bi-partisan plans they enact don’t work, they’ll get their chance to be the victors the next time around.

Lastly, elect politicians that will have the guts to debate and decide political questions, not send them to the Supreme Court, who is not supposed to rule on them by law.
