German-Paraguayan singer-songwriter Laura Brizuela cleans her closet on the latest single ‘Nothing Like That’, out 26 January via Embassy of Music. Marrying soulful, sparse trap hooks in minor key with soulful, free-flowing vocal runs akin to Selena GomezBecky G, and Lauren Jauregui, Brizuela puts her satiny voice and introspective lyrics front and centre to remind us of the importance of perseverance when carving out one’s own life, no matter how long and hard the road might be.

“All my life they were trying to make me buy their mindset
Won’t get me conform don’t need nothing like that
Take ’em all away, look how far it got me
Surfing my own wave, better off when I’m me”

For Brizuela, ‘Nothing Like That’ holds a special place. “If I had to describe it in one word, it would be therapy. I wrote it a while ago when I unexpectedly had just moved back into my hometown area and was heavily confronted with my past and memories from my childhood,” she explains the circumstances. “At the time, I didn’t have anything or anyone in my life that was safe and stable for me, and I was just struggling in every area of my life. Little did I know that stepping back into what I left would challenge me the most but eventually was the missing final piece of the healing process. Writing this song was my way of looking back and communicating what I wished to say for so many years in my life. Releasing this one and opening up that process for everyone who hears it is very special moment for me.”

Laura Brizuela didn’t pursue music – music pursued her. Growing up in Lemgo, Bielefeld with Paraguayan parents, Brizuela was 8 years old when she was picked by her teacher to play Mary and sing a solo in a Christmas musical. It was on stage in front of 2000 people where Brizuela had an epiphany: “THAT’s what I was born for!” Music kept following her through adolescence, and after doing serious soul-searching at a Bible college in California, she finally made a decision to focus on singing and songwriting in 2019. Two years after meeting her producer Mateo Diaz and marrying him Brizuela put out ‘Sanguine EP’ followed by a steady stream of new tracks, receiving recognition from Clout and The Honey Pop for her soulful R&B-pop hybrid. Signed to Embassy of Music in December 2022.
