Today, Detroit’s We Are Scorpio – a searing rock & roll duo composed of jessica Care moore and Steffanie Christi’an – announced their self-titled debut album, out February 2, 2024 via Javotti Media. Following years of friendship and collaborations with Daughters of Betty and Black Women Rock, the duo have finally unleashed their long awaited rock & roll project, and the timing couldn’t feel more right, with the Detroit Metro Times comparing their, “energetic stage show [to] Rage Against the Machine.”

Alongside the announcement, We Are Scorpio shared a glimpse into the upcoming project with the infectious single + video“Supa Dupa Star” ft. Talib Kweli. Energetic and prolific, the track reflects on a past relationship with someone who has turned unrecognizable with newfound fame. Across blazing electric guitars and harmonizing vocals, the lyrics convey nostalgia for the simpler times, expressing a sense of disconnect and wistfulness for the way things used to be. moore says, “It’s a fun song I wrote many years ago when my friends started to become famous. The song is about remembering where you came from and staying authentic.” Check out a live performance of “Supa Dupa Star” on Detroit’s Live In The D here.

We Are Scorpio will also be joining Talib Kweli on his upcoming West Coast tour. Tickets are available here.

“Supa Dupa Star”: Watch / Listen

Today’s release comes on the heels of We Are Scorpio’s recently debuted, lyrically charged first single, “Rock & Roll Ni**a,” which takes its provocative title from a Patti Smith song. The track is an homage to the Black musicians across history that created rock as we know it today, with the video being a salute to countless Black women who created the genre such as Big Mama Thornton, Odetta, Tina Turner, Poly Styrene, Meshell Ndegeocello, Tracy Chapman, Betty Davis, and so many more – celebrating the rockers that changed music forever.

The contributions Black women have made to the beginnings of what we know as rock & roll and the continued proliferation of the genre cannot be overstated. Black women’s participation in the growth of rock & roll is not discussed nearly enough. That’s where We Are Scorpio steps in.

Christi’an says, It was our goal to show a different version of women you constantly see on television, the internet, and hear on the radio. We Are Scorpio is not just an album or manufactured music group, it is a movement! jessica and I have reveled at the opportunity to create this work and we couldn’t be prouder. Every single track on this record hits you in all the right places. This album is about taking our power back. It is raw, honest and Black AF. You haven’t heard anything like this before and its statement is undeniable.”

moore continues, “This is the record I’ve been waiting for! So honored to be teaming up with my powerhouse sister, Steffanie. We recorded the album in one weekend at trumpeter Maurice Brown’s studio in Brooklyn. The stars finally lined up, and we were able to get Divinity Roxx to play bass on the recording! The album is poetry wrapped around some heavy guitars. I’m just having a helluva lot of fun performing this music and I hope it hits people the way we intend it to. Being on stage with Steff is every damn thing!!! The energy and sisterhood is unmatched.  It’s what rock & roll looks and feels like. For me, it’s liberation music. It’s always been ours for the taking.”

We Are Scorpio is made up of award-winning, world-renowned poet, recording artist, book publisher, screenwriter, and actor, jessica Care moore, and dynamic vocalist, songwriter, and musical theater performer, Steffanie Christi’an. The duo’s fiery, upcoming self-titled debut album delves into parts unknown and takes the road less traveled to get there. A unique take on modern rock, the project dares to imagine a world in which spoken word poetry and rock & roll riffs occupy the same space. Across the album’s ten tracks, We Are Scorpio goes beyond what we can even imagine. The duo tapped award-winning guitarist, songwriter, and producer Wayne Gerard who stepped in to help produce tracks “Supa Dupa Star,” “Scorpio,” “Rock & Roll Ni**a,” and “Jim Crow.” Expansive and intimate at the same time, the album is not only unapologetically Black, but universal all at once. Be prepared: We Are Scorpio is coming whether you’re ready or not.
