PDX Pop Producer James Julian Villa debuts hot new single, “My Friends Are Sober”

Coming off a hot streak of producing pop, folk, rock and indie artists out of Portland, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter James Julian Villa shares his first major release on March 3rd, 2023. Borrowing from early 2000s rock bands such as Weezer, Wheatus and All American Rejects, “My Friends are Sober” puts a modern spin on a familiar pop-rock sound. Gritty lo-fi acoustic guitars, dirty bass tones and ironic record scratches envelope James’ honest delivery of relatable lyrics sprinkled with dark humor.

I had been watching my friends grapple the unstoppable force of aging,” says Villa, “overcoming addiction, and saying goodbye to their 20’s, when I sang the words “Nobody drinks anymore…”  , and turned an existential crisis into a sarcastic take on growing up. The song’s style is a throwback to my teen years of listening to 2000’s rock, discovering Guitar Hero, and my own modern interpretation of an “aging emo” anthem.”
