Two Impossibly beautiful vocal pieces from austere Swedish genius, David Åhlén

We are never as frail as when we stand before death.

Watch and Pray (out March 4 on Jivvär Records) is the sixth release (three albums and three EPs) from David Åhlén, a songwriter and producer who has carved out a chamber-inspired indie niche for himself. These two songs, “My Only Treasure” and “And Her Voice Was Heard,” will be included in the upcoming release.

Åhlen’s falsetto is at the focal point of the music, inviting the listener to come close, almost within breathing distance. The electric baritone/guitar, synths, electronics and vocal layerings on the EP performed by Åhlén together with sparse string arrangements and harp by guest musicians seek to dissolve genres of alternative and classical music. The prayerful voice(s) against the backdrop of an ambient soundscape hints of a broad range of influences from artists like My Bloody Valentine, all the way to composers like Palestrina. Watch and Pray is a side step from the more imposing string/choir arrangements of Åhléns most recent release My Face Will Shine (May 2020, Jivvär Records), but retains the core of intimacy, a hallmark of Åhléns sound.

Watch and Pray is set to be released together with ‘My Face Will Shine’ on vinyl later this year, dedicated to his mother Birgitta Åhlén (1940-2021) and sister Tabita Green (1974-2020).
