U2 Releases Haunting New Version of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” to Commemorate 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday Massacre

Today is the 50th anniversary, not of the song, but of the peaceful protest in Northern Ireland which turned deadly when British soldiers fired at the crowd on January 30, 1972, killing 14 and wounding others. To commemorate the event, Bono and the Edge are releasing, via U2’s Instagram, a delicate, acoustic version of their 1983 song, “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” This video includes black and white images from the confrontation and is quite moving. Seattle songwriter Rich Horton says, “This acoustic version with its raw pain may be even more poignant than the bombastic original (which was great in its own right).”
