Fiona Apple covers the Waterboys’ “The Whole of the Moon”

This came out on January 2. I love Fiona Apple’s raspy, almost Bonnie Tyler-esque vocal intensity, the jazzy production touches and the nervous post song dance. She puts it all into this version of the song. There was nothing left, hence the collapse in the final seconds of the video.

Of course, I always liked Mandy Moore’s smiling version from many years ago too.

And here’s the genuine article. Nothing says, “1980s mystery, wonderment, happiness and possibility” better than the Waterboys1985 original which many of us didn’t discover until much later in the decade and even beyond. When the song was re-released in 1991, it rose to No. 3 on the UK charts.
