Jourdan Rystrom’s Battle Cry: “You Don’t Own Me”

Hugo, MN native, Jourdan Rystrom is back with an emotional and controversial single that is all about proclaiming exactly who she is as a woman in this time called, “Battle Cry.” Jourdan rocks for women everywhere in this lovely dark pop anthem stating, “You Don’t Own Me”. The song intensifies and clearly calls out men with an agenda to silence women. The informative and declarative bridge is full of quotes from powerful and influential women in history, from Oprah to Susan B. Anthony.

Starting out as an acoustic singer/songwriter in small rural coffee shops with her dad, (Hugo is 189 miles due south of Bob Dylan’s famed home town of Hibbing, Mn) Jourdan got her big break when her song “What’s Left To Say” was placed on the Soap Opera – The Bold and The Beautiful. Since that break, she has performed for thousands in Las Vegas, LA, San Diego, & Nashville. Her last release “Dead Sober” hit mainstream radio last year in 23 states and has been featured in multiple music magazines/blogs.

Jourdan continues to tell her story to empower others by being an activist, inspirational speaker and recording artist.

𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝘆 was birthed out of feelings of anger, frustration, and powerlessness. ⁣ ⁣ 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗿𝘆 at how things are still run in this world. ⁣ ⁣ 𝗙𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 that toxic masculinity STILL runs through the veins of many — generation after generation, continuing to pass down trauma and abuse without even the awareness of needing healing. ⁣ ⁣ “𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴.” 🤷🏼‍♀️⁣ ⁣ The same toxic masculinity that gets passed down first in the home and then in locker rooms and businesses — gets continually injected into the layers of government who pass new laws every day concerning women’s health and bodies.⁣ ⁣ Toxic masculinity even trickles down to the way we feel we need to act in relationships in order to deserve love.⁣ ⁣ When I first went to write this song, I channeled 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 when realizing that the systemic patriarchy was built into this country for a reason — to keep women and minorities oppressed. ⁣ ⁣ To keep us silent. ⁣ ⁣ 𝗦𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹. ⁣ ⁣ I mean… just 100 years ago women “earned” the right to vote. ⁣ ⁣ And only since the 1970s have we been able to take out a credit card in our own name without needing a man to be there with us to co-sign. ⁣ ⁣ 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲. 🤯⁣ ⁣ 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘴𝘢𝘺, ⁣ ⁣ “But that’s the way it’s always been.” 🤷🏼‍♀️⁣ “But that’s the way it’s supposed to be.” 🤷🏻‍♀️⁣ “But the man is the head of the household and I must honor him by submitting. It’s in the Bible.” 🤷🏽‍♀️⁣ ⁣ 𝗜 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂… 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆. ⁣ ⁣ Nope nope nope. ⁣ ⁣ I lovingly and powerfully disagree. ⁣ ⁣ Yes, this might have been the way it’s been up until now.⁣ ⁣ 𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳. ⁣ ⁣ It’s okay to realize what’s no longer working for us and change our ideas and opinions. ⁣ ⁣ Change and growth is all part of life.⁣ ⁣ 𝗦𝗼 𝗜’𝗺 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱. ⁣ ⁣ A stand for us to FEEL, HEAL, and RISE.⁣ ⁣ (cont’d in comments 👇🏻)
