Sly and Robbie in the Snow, Part 2, by Davin Michael Stedman

You know this is going to be a memorable reggae show when the lovely woman of Fiji believes for the first five minutes you are a prominant Fijian named Charles Everson, with a mother from Oregon.

I am definitely going to book a show in Fiji.

I am damn proud to have bought the album and to have paid for the tickets for this ride.

Watching Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare playing off each other with their Taxi Gang; hearing Bitty McLean for the first time, and how they put together a show.

I am going to get up there one of these nights with them, and when I do;

…now I know just what I need to do.

That is one of the top 5 rhythm section of all time, and #1 in terms of productivity and longevity and influence.

A duo clocking over 40 years of excellence and they are still on the charts with new songs and samples from an ink well with more original tracks than the population of Durham, North Carolina on a busy Spring day.

‘Welcome to Jamrock’ is a Sly & Robbie riddim. Bob Dylan’s album Infidels is Sly & Robbie.

Serge Gainsbourg, Madonna, Mick, Gregory Issacs, Jimmy Cliff.

I want to tour the ☆☆☆☆ out of ‘Free Your Mind’ and make critics put that song in their top 25 out of over 200,000.

But this next song I told Sly about tonight is a hook monster.

‘Mr. Brown’.

I’ll also mention the ‘Riddim Twins’ in my song ‘Going Back To Kingston’ I will post as an acoustic demo soon.

It was pretty neat talking to One Pop Recording Studio head engineer & boss unto himself Rory Baker in the sound booth, and telling him that ‘Free Your Mind’ is dropping March 4th with Tuff Gong International.

“That song is a hit” he said.

He asked after the show what I thought of the performance and I told him my thoughts.

…and then I told him that I want to go on tour with them.

“Talk to Sly” he said.

I am going to bring them two more hits first. And the secret is that they have my tune ‘Ice Man’ in the can.

So what did I think of the show?

Mesmorizing, full of polish and spice rib riddims, and hit and after hit. Great singers and crowd control. A masterclass with a small combo.

Give me 4 songs in a set and let me take it to church and to the backstreets.

That’s what I am training for.

To be frank, I want to hit it so hard with the Riddim Twins in London, Keith Richards feels a disruption in the force.

…and to be frank, buy your friends’ CDs and tickets, because it matters. It always matters.
