Carvin’ Up Tracks with The Shark – West Indian Rock Adventures, by Davin Michael Stedman

So nice to spend a couple hours in the studio with Stingshark Sting. We were working on vocals for ‘Going South’, a track I brought to Hold in Fyah inspired by the fact that MAGA is a collection of fervently half witted anti-American Trash Pandas.

But you can dance to it!

Antony Su was on hand to document the moment.

It’s been adventure working on this West Indian Rock album in Seattle and Jamaica. During a brief pause I got on the phone with the manager of Reggae Powerhouse Band about the great reception the lead ‘Free Your Mind’ received from IRIE FM‘s DJ Wayne.

Not every song on this album is going to be tailor made for Jamaican & Reggae / Dancehall pop radio. But working with producers and fellow songwriters like Anthony Red Rose and Lenky Marsden is fascinating because they have the facility and expertise to turn my “folk tings” and other catchy melodic and chordal ideas into genuine street party anthems.

It takes a village, for me to pillage the world with my sonic daggers and ear shaggin’ hooks.

Christopher Meredith is going to be sending over his bass line I hadn’t even realized that he recorded for ‘Rum Kings’ between my two trips.

I have plans to feature both Stingshark and Eric Struthers on some tunes. I imagine Eric playing some memorable guitar lines along the tradition that Muscle Shoals legend Wayne Perkins actually laid down on ‘Concrete Jungle’ and ‘Stir it Up’ which I always assumed was the godlike hand of Peter Tosh.

I appreciate everyone, starting with BJ DjSticky (Bluejay aka Dj Sticky ) and Sick Donkey Records for making this so called solo thing a happening. And also much love to Erin Miller for getting me out of America, where I was able to start a whole new band and Bedlam Isle collective in South East England.

Steady as she goes…I just have to sing my ass off on the songs that all started on my acoustic guitar. Some of them are bangerz.

Davin’s new song has been released and has become a global earworm and Caribbean dancehall hit. Listen here on Reggaeville: DAVIN MICHAEL STEDMAN & ANTHONY RED ROSE – FREE YOUR MIND FEAT. SLY & ROBBIE WITH LENKY MARSDEN. The video is now available on Youtube.
