Girl Trouble Lighten Up A Friday Night At Slim’s Last Chance, by Holly Homan

DSC_0123It’s the last Friday of September and the place to be is Slim’s Last Chance in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood. Northwest legends Girl Trouble are headlining a show. Hailing from Tacoma, Washington, Girl Trouble never puts on a disappointing show.

GT front man, KP Kendall is the ultimate showman, often making spontaneous jokes, this time it was talking about some diet pill that caused “milk to come out your boobs as a side effect.” This was after he’d stripped off his t-shirt and a woman from the audience fondled his nipples. KP also has the classic rock n roll voice. He can belt and he can growl with the best rock male vocalists and he plays a pretty mean sax.

The rest of the band, Kahuna (a first rate guitar player whom I knew when he was in high school), Dale Phillips on bass, and Bon Wheelie on drums (the only local punk rock band I can think of that has a female drummer). Though the other members try to play it straight to KP’s zany on stage antics, they eventually succumb to silliness as well when KP taunts and goads them into doing so.

KP always begins shows wearing a t-shirt, but sheds it part way through. This time he wore it on his head for about three songs without missing a beat.

The impeccable sound and KP’s mingling in the audience, sitting on laps (of both men and women)and dancing with and serenading people, made this a really fun night.

Unfortunately I missed the opening band, Red Hex, as I got stuck in #*#*# Mariners traffic. Hopefully I’ll have another chance.
