CYP2 Spring Retrospective from IHEARTCOMIX Records on Vimeo.

The legendary LA based bi-weekly party, Check Yo Ponytail 2, is coming to Portland 10/26 at Branx, Seattle 10/27 at Neumos and Chicago 10/28 at The Mid!. Organized by Franki Chan (IHEARTCOMIX), Danny Johnson (Media Contender) and Zane Landreth, the CYP2 tour features an eclectic mix of new and established artists from rock, dance and hip hop. Gracing the lineup will be Spank Rock, Big Freedia, The Death Set, Pictureplane and Franki Chan, all supported by the stunning visuals of Demonbabies. Spank Rock’s performances will closely follow release of his new album, Everything Is Boring and Everyone Is a Fucking Liar, on Bad Blood Records 9/27. This eagerly awaited album was produced by CYP2 friend Boys Noize.

To celebrate the tour, Franki Chan has made a “Yes We Chan” mix tape HERE. (More mix tapes below).

The main function of CYP, Franki Chan told Spinner, “is to introduce new artists or shine a spotlight on cool things that are happening musically. We like to be able to provide people with a wealth of information on each artist and the show as a whole. Adding to the experience are these mixtapes and our videos that give people something they can ‘take home’ with them and/or experience the show whether they live in L.A. or not.”

Artist Bios

Spank Rock – Naeem Juwan AKA Spank Rock comes from the wall-sweating, pipe-bursting, hip-grinding basements of the Baltimore Bass movement. After spending some time at Drexel University in Philly he linked up with the Diplo-powered Hollertronix crew and began crafting the type of live performances that have become underground legend. With sharp, precise lyricism paired with an exciting array of rhythmic samples and solid beats, his first offering, YoYoYoYoYo, was a defining moment for Spank Rock and his extended family of collaborators. The highly anticipated follow up to his groundbreaking debut album has been five years in the making. The album, Everything is Boring and Everyone is a Fucking Liar, will be produced by Boys Noize, and promises to define the future of modern hip hop, both sonically and culturally.

Big Freedia – Big Freedia, Queen Diva is like nothing you’ve ever seen. As royalty of the Bounce music scene in New Orleans, Big Freedia performs with a powerful energy and towering presence that will turn any venue into a body shakin, sweat fest, as she shouts and jives to her eccentric beats. Expect a full stage as Big Freedia’s “Azz Everywhere” never fails to turn everyone and anyone into the free form dance machines we are all meant to be.

Pictureplane – With glitched out dissonance and lo-fi undertones, Pictureplane creates textured, eccentric dance music that is progressive, dark, and wait…fun? Yes. His gothwave anthems seamlessly hop around 90′s house, baleric disco, and deep, grime induced dub stylings. His ability to assimilate genres without making the songs seem overly dense is a calculated skill and it is no understatement that Pictureplane will be one of the artists to watch this year as he continues to progress this newer, darker mentality into the new year. More information HERE

The Death Set – The Death Set have arrived. After years of playing basements, warehouses, garages, your mom’s apartment, the Death Set are ready to move on. Their high energy, full throttle stage antics combined with their own signature brand of thrash punk is a sight not to be missed. With stage dives, shout outs, freestyle breaks, and an unstoppable energy, The Death Set are certainly the riotous affair that we’ve all been waiting for.

Franki Chan – In a decade of revivals and reimagination, Franki Chan holds close the ideals and vision that has brought him to the forefront of his craft, seamlessly merging music and art by way of live performances and comics; all of which contribute to creating a pop-renegade aesthetic that defines the energy and unpredictability of the man himself. This post-digital renaissance artist has created an empire of all the things he loves and is.
