The Most Talented Singer-Songwriter You’ve Yet to Hear – Lorelei Carlson – Blueberry Eyes, By Robert

In June 2003 I decided to celebrate my birthday by inviting my friends to a music party. I was living with my nearly 12-year-old daughter Lorelei in Bogotá at the time. I had many talented musician friends, so my idea was to play and sing with them.

Because Lorelei was really getting into singing, I asked her if she wanted to perform, too. She agreed, and said she would perform her version of “At Last,” the song made famous by Etta James.

It was a wonderful night. I shared some of my new compositions, jammed with my friends, danced to the music of a salsa band and listened to poetry and songs performed by my friends. Toward the middle of the evening, I introduced Lorelei. I imagined she would be nervous, having never really sung in public before. We started the music and then…

I will never forget the shiver that went up my spine when my tiny daughter began belting out the song with a BIG VOICE! My friends and I – some 35 people – sat in awe, enraptured, mesmerized by this girl’s vocal ability. It was at that point that I realized that not only did Lorelei have a unique talent, but that her talent surpassed my own. All by herself she mastered the dynamics of the song, used vibrato to ramp up the emotion, and sang with such energy that I have no doubt everyone else in the room felt the same frisson as I did. When she finished, the room erupted in a huge ovation – the first of many to come.

In the ensuing years, Lorelei has worked tirelessly to perfect her talent. But she has gone on to become more than just an amazing vocalist. She went from accompanying me to the recording studio, to composing her own songs, and then to arranging and producing them herself. While still in high school, her composition “Without You” became somewhat of an underground hit. A couple years ago, Lorelei’s MySpace page scored over one million listens. She continued to wow her fans with catchy tunes like “Think of You,” “Just A Fool,” and “Alone” – each in a totally different style that attracted different audiences.

In 2010, Lorelei made the move to Los Angeles, where she is working two jobs while promoting her music. She has just finished recording several songs for a new EP. The one below is one of my favorites, “Blueberry Eyes.”

If you like Lorelei’s music, please pass the word. Share the links with your friends. Several of her songs are available for the nominal price of 99 cents on Amazon and iTunes. If enough people purchase her songs, maybe she can use the proceeds to record more!
