Bearsuit – When Will I Be Queen? – By Peter Dysart

There is no doubt that Bearsuit is a band that will provoke a strong and somewhat immediate response from listeners. As a litmus test for this theory, I offer up one of the band’s new singles, “When Will I Be Queen?” Many listeners will love it; many others will positively despise it. Personally, I share absolutely no bias whatsoever. I’m as neutral as Switzerland wearing a bearsuit.

No matter, really, because the fact that you’ve now heard of this band will suffice in planting a seed that will gain deeper roots in the future. Lisa Horton and her merry band of bears have devised a master plan that will have you singing their chorus and refrain in your sleep.

Whilst this single itself fits into the story flow of Bearsuit’s new album, “The Phantom Forest,” the unmistakable biting and self-important social commentary helps this song stands on its own merits. Nestled in an uneasy cradle of sharp lyrical thorns and shrieking statements, and spread across a decade of dark and urgent 80s synth dance beats, “When Will I Be Queen” is a pure kind of infectious fun that carries you away on a dark undercurrent of detritus.

Bearsuit is a multiverse of sounds and song styles that beautifully blend electro-punk, dance punk and artrock. There’s little formula at work here. At their most noble level, Bearsuit is a kind of geek-driven literary playground. At their most base element, such as this single, Bearsuit is a cheeky sonic tumble in the candy floss spinner.

“I tell you lover,
I have bad thoughts,
I have bad thoughts…
No inner monologue.”

Proceed to hate or love.

Note: The US release of Bearsuit’s “The Phantom Forest” is just days away.
