In light of last Tuesday’s special election results, we now know that if a Republican gets outed as a child molester in Alabama, he might actually lose an election by the landslide margin of one and a half percentage points. This was also with the Democrat, Doug Jones, running a vigorous and intelligent campaign and, shockingly, outspending Roy Moore by ten to one. It was an encouraging day for decency in public life, but it was also a reminder of what it’s up against, at least in certain parts of our country. For another such reminder, this piece from Charles Pierce, attending a Moore rally for GQ, is a classic horror tale of the dark reaches of our political culture:
