Strawberries Rarely Make it into the House, by Jill Kuhel

Pick the strawberry and eat! Boom. Drop the mic. At our house strawberries rarely make it into the house to make anything with them. We have several kinds of strawberries in the yard ripe and ready to eat. The white alpine strawberry, which is soft and tastes pineapple-ish, is the kid’s favorite. At the top is the firm strawberry, like in the grocery store, which is my mom’s favorite. At far right is a soft yummy red which is my favorite. Strawberries make a nice edible ground cover with the white alpine strawberries even growing in the shade.

91 year old Marjorie was telling me about the year her husband was trying to be helpful and fertilized her strawberries. That year they grew lush and green but didn’t produce much fruit. She said the take away from that was, “Sometimes like strawberries we have to be stressed and go through tough times to produce fruit.” I love her!
