Sick Of Sarah — Charismatic Riot Grrrlz From Minneapolis Turn the New Funhouse Into Party Land, by Holly Homan

17400649716_72209a5cc2_zOn Thursday night, May 7, I ventured out to what is now the new Fun House location. The venue which used to be known as the Lounge at El Corazon is now the new Funhouse. The five piece all women pop punk band from Minneapolis was playing. I’d seen Sick Of Sarah a couple years ago at Warped Tour and was totally blown away by them, so when I saw they were playing I decided I had to see them again to see if the spark was still there. It was.

Sick Of Sarah, an all girl outfit defies the stereotypes which have plagued women in rock music since time began. These ladies can shred guitar chords and set a stage on fire as well as any testosterone filled band. Besides being really cute, they ooze charm non-stop. They play original songs that are straight up in your face rock and roll with heavy punk elements. Their diminutive but spunky lead vocalist, Abisha Uhl, was all over the stage, leaning into the crowd and often jumping off stage to join them on the dance floor. She wore a black ski hat the entire set and often pulled it down almost covering her eyes like a South Park character.

At one point a couple young women were invited on stage where one proposed to the other on bended knee. She said yes and everyone cheered for them. It was very touching and very romantic and yes, they were a very cute couple. Here’s wishing them years of happiness.

Newcomer Alexa Wolfe sported long locks roaming down her back, which she whipped about while shredding guitar chords. Katie Murphy, Lead Guitar added to the band’s undying charm and also was no slouch in the hair whipping department. Often she and Alexa stood side by side, whipping their hair about without missing a lick on their respective guitars. Jessie Farmer, Lead and Rhythm guitar & backup vocals and Jessica Forsythe, Drums round out the rest of the band.

Sick Of Sarah is a band who obviously loves playing with each other and obviously love milking an audience and they do this very well. They also seem to have developed a strong following here in Seattle as there was a decent crowd in the club for a Thursday night. This is heartening to see as they have worked really hard to get to this point. I was so glad I went out even though it was a school night. Sick Of Sarah are very worth checking out.

I missed the first two openers, but did catch a band from England, a trio, called Ten Fifty-Six Zero. This band includes a drummer, a guitarist and a female lead singer/guitarist who had a crystal clear voice. Think Judy Collins swallowed Grace Slick’s voice and you get an idea of what she sounded like. Occasionally the other guitarist would harmonize and their voices blended beautifully together. The sound that night was impeccable. I can’t find this band on FB so I don’t know their names.
