I listen to music nearly everyday. Morning, afternoon, evening, after midnight! I’ve often wondered about what moves us to listen to music.
Obv you got yer favs, right? Songs that bring back memories, recollections, danceable crap (🙀), and sentiments that echo the life you lived through (even if it grinds on and on). They’re not always a Top 40 hit, but they always bring those sing-a-long, foot stomping, ass shaking moments to life, right?
So what makes music so appealing? The singer, the band, the lyrics, the jam? After all my years listening I can’t tell ya. I dunno, I’m always seeking the “magic” song/band. One band or artist may catch my ear, but how do you determine what’s worthy to listen to??
Popular music, in its heyday, was primarily driven by the available radio stations we all listened to. (Strange but true: My buddies and I would drive to the top of the highest hill in our town to listen to KAAY from Little Rock, Arkansas. Best rock-n-roll in its time, right? 🎸) It saddens me that radio is not inventive enough to capture my ear anymore. Sure, on a whim I’ll switch to a radio station, but I primarily stream music from my phone.
Oh, dammit, I can’t forget y’all might spin vinyl, right? My best gift from the little woman was a turntable. Who knew she’d know my soft spot? That damn thing lasted nearly 20 years. Still got the vinyl to spin and I only gotta refurbish that durn player.
That said, I’ve got cases of cassettes (pre-made and originally made) that I play in my garage now and then (not an option in the current cars, right?). Surprisingly, they’ve retained their integrity and I’ve not noticed any degradation. I’ve got CD’s up my wazoo, too! And holy cows, Lord knows how many GB’s of digital music I’ve got…
Music influences us all. We smile at our fav tunes, we dance to them, we reflect on their impact on our lives, we woo others to listen to the magic we discovered…
Music makes it worth it all! 🎸🎸🎸
