On the Sunday afternoon of June 22, 2025, I ventured out to Seattle’s Tractor Tavern to see the legendary Jonathan Richman. The last time I saw him was in 2018 so this was a long overdue treat.
Jonathan performed with just an acoustic guitar and a drummer (Tommy Larkins) as accompanist. He immediately oozed charisma and immediately had the packed crowd cheering and clapping.
This was the first show of four straight nights and it’s a safe bet to assume all shows were as packed as this one was. Jonathan’s songs are a combination of folky sounds (think Woody Guthrie) and quirky lyrics similar to Robyn Hitchcock. He even managed to crack himself up more than once, which made him even more endearing. When he sang “David Fought Goliath With A Stone” he had everyone singing along. They also sang along when he performed the very humorous “I Was Dancing In the Lesbian Bar.”
All throughout his one hour performance he received very enthusiastic applause. There is no question that Seattle loves Jonathan Richman. He is a legend and the seven years since he last graced Seattle has not dampened that enthusiasm. As mentioned, he only played for one hour and he does not do encores. This was an hour that went by way too fast. I could have gone for another half hour at least.
Jonathan Richman is pure delight and I hope I don’t have to wait seven years to see him again.
