Justin Soileau is a 23 year old, independent singer-songwriter from Texas. He’s currently living in Costa Mesa, California and striving for his big break. His music has been featured on the MTVu program, “The Freshman,” KROQ.com, and college radio stations at UC Irvine and UC Berkeley. His debut EP, “The Heat” was released on iTunes on March 4, 2011.
After hearing a Soileau live performance, the OC Music Magazine described Soileau as a younger, deeper-voiced version of a Seattle legend: “With slight timbre in his voice, Justin sings like a deeper toned Ben Gibbard of Death Cab fame.”
Soileau’s latest single, mysteriously titled, “A Simple Song,” has much more than simplicity going for it. The 405 describes it in this way, “Justin Soileau’s offering is both simple and flawless, a winning combination.”
In the OC Weekly, Ned Raggett, an esteemed music writer and FOTK (Friend of Tom Kipp), wrote: “”A Simple Song” is another example of Soileau’s aptitude at combining upbeat musical sentiments with often darker lyrics–not that it’s a tale of flat-out despair, but when you consider the first verse is about a phone call helping rescue the narrator from a drunken binge and worse, a summer pop hit this isn’t. But Soileau’s love of piano-led pop/rock in a ’70s, post-Beatles vein remains paramount, down to the peppy organ break. Given the chorus is all about how the titular object is the kind of thing that can pull someone out of a rut, it’s a gentle, appropriate way of having one’s cake and eating it, too.”
Soileau has never performed in Oregon before, but, he says, “Portland is definitely a place I’d like to play one day.” Presumably a rising talent like Soileau would also like to play in some other great music towns, like Seattle, Austin, San Francisco and Chicago.
