America 250: Why This Milestone is a Pivotal Moment for National Parks

By America’s National Parks™

In 2026, the United States will celebrate a significant milestone: 250 years since declaring its independence. Since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, America has endured high points, low points, and everything in between. Today, our nation’s national parks have been stewards of the American story, preserving important locations and interpreting seminal moments in our history.

As the US gears up to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the country’s national parks are also gearing up, creating events, experiences, and tours to highlight the many incredible moments throughout the American Revolution that have shaped our country.

The vital role of parks in the 250th celebration

The National Park Service (NPS) manages over 400 sites across the nation, including not only natural wonders and cultural landmarks, but also battlefields and other sites that were integral to the founding of our nation. These sites preserve moments in time such as the Boston Tea Party, the first shots of the Revolutionary War at Lexington and Concord, and the signing of our Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. The goal is to connect visitors with these moments in a vivid and tangible way, sparking education and reverence that goes beyond what many of us learned in our textbooks.

Our national parks have committed to not just preserving history, but interpreting it — something that will be on full display during America’s 250th events. With battle reenactments, historic site tours, living history presentations, and informative exhibits, the national parks dedicated to American Revolution history and the story of our independence will tell the tales of who America is and how we have evolved as a country over the past 250 years.

Programming and partnerships

The exceptional array of programs the NPS has planned aims to make the anniversary both unforgettable and enriching. Partners of the national parks, such as America’s National Parks™, have helped make these events possible through their America’s National Parks™ 250th Grant Program – History Happens Here. They have also planned complementary programming through their Passport To Your National Parks® program with the release of a new edition to the Passport family: Passport to the American Revolution. The book features a compelling timeline of the war, spots for official America250™ ink cancellation stamps, and a foreword written by renowned documentarian Ken Burns, who is unveiling his new documentary series, “The American Revolution,” this winter.

Through the Passport To Your National Parks® program, visitors to national parks and Revolutionary War-era sites can collect special ink cancellation stamps and create a personalized record of their travel in honor of the 250th anniversary. Other specialized programming includes themed exhibitions that allow visitors to experience significant moments of the Revolution up close, as well as expanded accessibility features such as tactile maps and audio programs. Additionally, free national park access will be available on select days throughout 2026, including Constitution Day on September 17.

Participation and learning at America’s National Parks

Those behind the planning and programming of events for America’s 250th are focused on providing fun and engaging experiences, while also hoping to expand learning opportunities for visitors. When highlighted with commemorative events and immersive experiences, our national parks become deeply personal landscapes, a part of all of us who call the United States home.

From Minute Man National Historic Park to the Yorktown Battlefield, the entire story of the Revolution can be told through visits to the sites and reflective experiences that invite visitors not only to listen, but also to learn and even participate.

Creating a legacy

The 250th anniversary of our nation’s independence provides an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the stories, spaces, and people that have shaped who we are as a country. America’s National Park System does not just hold beautiful scenery and historic monuments. These are places where people who played significant roles in the Revolution once stood, sites that house buildings where decisions were made, and battlefields where blood was shed.

As we near the nation’s 250th year, preservation may be the cornerstone of this moment in time. Only by delving deeply into the historical record and perhaps walking in the footsteps of infamous Americans, such as George Washington, may visitors begin to gain a deeper understanding and a greater reverence for the country and what it means to have gained independence all those years ago.

The national parks hold our legacy, and this significant milestone anniversary is the park system’s time to shine. The parks not only tell the story of where we came from, but also how far we can go.

As we head into 2026 and a year-long celebration of America’s semiquincentennial, we recognize as a country what a vital role the national parks play in commemorating our independence. America’s 250th anniversary is a time to learn, explore, and immerse ourselves in the preserved history that the National Parks System has to offer.
