On Friday night, the Mission Theater crowd stepped into Joshua Josué’s world, a place of dusty highways, bilingual ballads, and music born from survival. Chicano rocker Joshua Josué, fresh off the release of his debut full-length Beneath the Sand, delivered a set that was equal parts intimate storytelling and electrified roots-rock celebration.

Backed by a stellar band, Josué’s voice carried the grit of lived experience, moving seamlessly between English and Spanish. Songs like the cinematic title track “Beneath the Sand” and the windswept “Bogart & Me” unfolded like postcards from the road, each steeped in the travels and trials that shaped them.

Cameo turns from friends and heroes elevated the celebration. Steve Berlin of Los Lobos brought his unmistakable saxophone warmth, weaving Tex-Mex textures through the latter part of the set, while Portland’s own Freddy Trujillo stepped up for a powerful vocal turn that had the crowd roaring.

Near the very end of the night, Josué smiled and quoted Ritchie Valens in the film La Bamba: “Here’s a bit of a rattlesnake.” With that, he and the band launched into a raucous, crowd-pleasing rendition of that iconic Chicano rock anthem. They had the floor shaking and the audience shouting along.

Josué’s charisma lies in his openness, sharing stories of grief, rebirth, and the strange poetry of the in-between places. Whether leaning into a tender ballad or pushing the band into a freight-train groove, he radiated the joy of playing these songs with friends who are also musical heroes.

The night closed on a note of pure connection, a fitting finale for a show rooted in survival, transformation, and the shared joy of music that bridges cultures and generations.
