The Victim takes full control of ‘Heartaches & Lows’

A blank calendar and a head full of ideas became the starting point for Kenneth Nefling when Covid shut the world down — leading to his most personal and uncompromising work to date. ‘Heartaches & Lows’ is the result of a curious and persistent deep dive into the creative process – and a testament to what can happen when you take charge from start to finish.

Although ‘Heartaches & Lows’ is his debut album, The Victim is already a name that has gained attention i Danish media. The single ‘Ghost House’ has been on rotation on Danish national radio P5, while previous releases have been praised by outlets like Side33, HQ Music, Bands of Tomorrow, and the British blog Nordic Music Central.

A handcrafted album with room to breathe
From songwriting to mastering, Copenhagen based singer-songwriter Kenneth Nefling has had his hands on every part of the process. His upcoming album leans heavily on one-take recordings and an organic, unpolished sound, where raw emotion takes precedence over perfection.

“It all started during the pandemic. Suddenly, I had the time and began to dive into everything myself – and it’s been a huge gift. It’s amazing to be able to control the entire sonic aesthetic, even if it’s not perfect. Maybe that’s exactly why it feels real,” he says.

The album moves within a classic singer-songwriter universe, inspired by genre heavyweights like Phoebe Bridgers, David Gray and Maggie Rogers. It’s handcrafted, Anglo-influenced pop with a constant undercurrent of melancholy, but also a surprising sense of optimism.

From heartbreak to hope
Unlike The Victim’s earlier EPs, where heartbreak took center stage, here we meet a songwriter in a different place in life. The last four songs on the album, including ‘Soak’ and the title track ‘Heartaches & Lows’ are built on something more positive and life-affirming.

Nefling has found peace in his life and has met the love he once wrote songs about searching for. And you can feel it. The album closes with the title track ‘Heartaches & Lows’ – a minimalist, eight-minute-long buildup that ends in pure release.

Another of the central tracks on the album is ‘Did I Make You See’ – a piano-driven pop song featuring handclaps and an irresistibly catchy melody. It’s perhaps the album’s most accessible moment and showcases Kenneth’s ability to balance grandeur with intimacy.

The Victim is the alias of Kenneth Nefling – a Danish singer-songwriter with a love for melancholy, strong songwriting, and an uncompromising DIY spirit. After several single releases and three EPs – including ‘When Everything Is Over Pt. 1’ – he is now ready to release his first full-length album.

‘Heartaches & Lows’ will be released on June 20, 2025, created entirely without outside collaborators – except for a choir contribution from Kenneth’s girlfriend on the song Walls.
