It has always struck me as unfathomable that humanity cares the least for its fellow man…
“I don’t believe in guarded borders
And I don’t believe in hate
I don’t believe in generals
Or their stinking torture states
And when I talk with the survivors
Of things too sickening to relate
If I had a rocket launcher
I’d make somebody pay”
~Bruce Cockburn – If I Had A Rocket Launcher (lyrics are slightly modified…)
Cockburn’s lyrics often reflect interests in spirituality, human rights, environmental issues, and relationships, and describe his experiences in Central America and Africa. In our lifetime, no one should suffer needlessly or without some recourse from those of us who give a crap.
I hope that my intent is not missed.
There is enough shit that happens every day that shouldn’t be overlooked or forgotten.
We, collectively as “marginally intelligent individuals,” need to set aside our differences and make a difference in our lifetime.
It doesn’t cost anything to be kind…
I knew Cockburn’s hits fodder given to the masses via radio, but my initial immersion with his music started with his early to mid-‘80’s releases. Later, after acquiring his release Speechless, I read the liner notes and discovered it was a collection of instrumental pieces from several of his past albums. I promptly went out acquiring more of his back catalog and filled in some blanks. In hindsight, I realize the late-‘80’s music sorta disconnected me from current, popular music…I lost touch/interest?
Anywho, Cockburn is an amazing musician and songwriter. I realize he likely ruffles the feathers of a lot of listeners, but then they’re not listening anyway, right? 😆
