How to Become a Digital Nomad by Cody McBride

Are you a nature enthusiast dreaming of becoming a digital nomad and taking your business on the road? Are you tired of office life and looking for ways to work in the great outdoors? Courtesy of East Portland Blog, here are some things to think about before zipping up your backpack.

Become a Full-Time Remote Worker

Today, many workers are opting to work from home at least a few days a week, and they’ve proven to be as productive – if not more – as when they were in the office full time. With less or no commute time, workers are able to enjoy their lives more. So if your employer is okay with you switching to working remotely full-time, why not take it one step further and leave your home office to hit the road? As long as you can show your employer that you can be as productive working remotely as you are sitting in your office, this is a good option if you want to quench your thirst for adventure while still getting a paycheck. Make sure you make yourself available to your boss and colleagues during the daytime via email or cell phone, though, even if you feel like you’re on vacation!

Start Your Own Business

If your current work situation doesn’t allow for working outdoors, consider starting your own business. Many jobs can be done remotely like accounting, graphic design, marketing, and even teaching, so once you’ve found your ideal line of work and picked a name for your company, decide on a business structure to turn it into a reality. For small businesses, an LLC is a good option as it presents many benefits when it comes to taxes and liability protection. It’s also less paperwork-intensive than forming a corporation, and you can find formation services online to get you started. Be aware that each state has its own requirements when it comes to forming an LLC, so make sure your business is in compliance with the rules in your particular state.

Also, don’t forget that you can advertise for free via social media! If the photos you want to use are too large, you can always use this free tool to resize image for Instagram. This is a great way to save money while reaching an enormous pool of potential customers.

Get the Tools You Need

Digital nomads know how to live minimalistically and they tend to travel light, but there are some tools they absolutely need in order to perform their duties in a digitally-driven work environment. Your computer, tablet, and smartphone all need to be charged, so if you’re ever in a location with no access to functioning outlets, you may need to invest in battery banks, solar chargers, a portable generator, or a power inverter. If you end up in a location with poor internet or wifi connection, consider investing in a cell phone booster, a mobile hotspot device, or a dongle hotspot to connect to a cellular network. That way, your clients will always be able to reach you, wherever you may be.

Find Internet-Accessible Campsites

Once upon a time, camping and RVing were activities designed to make us leave our busy lives behind and enjoy nature and the outdoors. But today, campers and RVers need to have WiFi and internet access to stay connected to their friends, families, and of course coworkers, employers and clients if they take their jobs on the road. When choosing your destination, opt for campsites that boast fast internet and great WiFi. But remember that you are sharing WiFi with the other campers on site, so the internet may get slower, especially if your work requires uploading and downloading large files and uses a lot of bandwidth.

Becoming a digital nomad has never been easier thanks to all the new technological gadgets available and a large variety of campsites with internet accessibility. So pack up your laptop and get some work done in the great outdoors!
