Mavis Staples, Wilco, Billy Bragg and Woody Guthrie, by Ricky Polite

Mavis Staples is one of the very true American voices left. She sang with the Staples Singers and had many hits with that group. Mavis early on became the featured singer there given her unique sound. Her voice was low and passionate and the only one of its kind. Mavis is a national treasure.

I love Mavis Staples, and supporting her is one of the things I admire Jeff Tweedy for.

Speaking of Tweedy, have you heard the Wilco-Billy Bragg collaborations on the Woody Guthrie lyrics? Some of my favorite work from either artist. Puts Wilco’s considerable chops in the service of songs with actual melodies and intelligible songs.

Saw the Cubs lose to the Red Sox last week at Fenway. Fun but I’ve paid less to fly to Chicago. On the other hand they sell Fenway Franks and Harpoon IPA tallboys.

Harpoon IPA, Mmmm.
