Skating Polly – Pretective Boy, by Mike Hughes

skating-pollyI shouldn’t like Skating Polly, two Oklahoma kids playing thrashy post punk, but it turns out I love them utterly to bits. I got the album on a whim, and to check them out further, seeing as it turns out I’d seen them live supporting Babes In Toyland. I’d kinda filed that away in the back of my mind, due to other stuff going on that night in the form of a disastrous photo shoot.

As with so much of my music, after one listen, it got dumped onto my iPod new music playlist, just to see how it fared. And as occasionally and triumphantly happens, every time it came round on shuffle, I was blown away just a little bit more. They’re two step sisters, Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse and man they’re young, Kelli now being 16 and the other the grand old age of 21. The astounding thing is, they’ve been playing live since they were 9 and 14 respectively. I mean, which teenage girl goes on stage to play punk music with their not-even-a teenager-yet sibling?

It’s not just me. Along with NPR, who put Pretective Boy on heavy rotation, their biggest fan is a certain Kate Nash, who was at (and madly tweeting her love of the band) from SP’s latest gig over here in London.
