Cooper’s Hawk: Cycle of Life, by Andrea Miller

coopershawkHeard a ruckus in the backyard, only to discover a Cooper’s Hawk trying to catch some lunch unsuccessfully. (a baby robin hidden in the bushes that hadn’t quite found its flying wings). Lots of upset robins trying to distract the hawk, but it was my appearance at the screen door that caused the hawk to fly off into the big cedar out back — good hiding place.

A few minutes later, went to look out the screen door, and found the hawk calmly sitting in the grass, until its prey made a move and the hawk grabbed it and flew off into the cedar again.

If it had been a cat, I’d have had no problem interrupting this hunting episode, but this time around the “circle of life” overruled my intervention. I love the robins, but I love the hawks as much, and they have to eat sometime.
