Austin’s Sweet Spirit Brings Garage Soul Joy and Endearing Mayhem to Kelly’s Olympian May 23, By Paul Stinson

sweetspiritFresh off the first leg of their first-ever national tour, a marathon stint of SXSW shows and a current string of west coast dates in support of Spoon, Sweet Spirit will bring its spiritual thrill-ride of garage soul joy and endearing mayhem for their first-ever Portland show, setting up shop at Kelly’s Olympian on Saturday, May 23.

Perpetually in motion in their Austin home base and championed tirelessly by Spoon’s Britt Daniels, Sweet Spirit has begun to garner its share of hubbub nationally and locally, including a spread in the virtual pages of Spin for their collaboration with Daniels for their updated take on Spoon showstopper ‘Paper Tiger’ while garnering ‘artist of the month’ accolades at Austin’s fabled KUTX, including an in-studio performance which you can find here.

Accolades, buzz and visible champions aside, to see this band is to live well and experience a sense of revival and joy that is dynamic, blue-collar, heartfelt and underdog, steeped in the ways of rock that you know while carving a garage Motown alleyway that’s all their own, led by the songwriting engine of Andrew Cashen and frontwoman Sabrina Ellis, whose heart-stopping and riot-starting vocals are a sight rarely seen.
