She was no fool, by Tom Fredrickson

The late Lesley Gore was on the epochal T.A.M.I. Show; that’s epitaph enough for any pop star from the 60s. Here’s her full set:

My favorite was “She’s a Fool,” with its unforgettable, unexplainable backing vocal hook of “shacka doula.” When you’ve got Quincy Jones producing and Claus Ogerman arranging, you can turn otherwise forgettable stuff into discs for the ages.

And then there is this clip from the Batman series; Gore played Catwoman’s sidekick and sings Bob Crewe’s best Beach Boys imitation:

Also, a clip from The Mike Douglas Show from 1969, with other guests Shelley Berman and Barry Goldwater (!). To make your cognitive dissonance complete, she sings a song from Guys and Dolls.

I’d swear off men too out of sheer horror if Barry Goldwater commented on my ass on national tv.

Seemed like a hip chick.
