The Smiths – There is a Light that Never Goes Out, by Steve Stav

I remember driving around with a good friend in her old VW bug, in the summer evenings after work. She had broken up with her longtime boyfriend, I wasn’t seeing anyone… just bored. And feeling left behind. Everyone was elsewhere. Very little money, and we were already too well-trained by our upbringing to figure out that all this driving around Everett could’ve equaled a few trips to the big city and back; we cruised past places we knew. We listened to this album in the car over and over again, thinking of where we zigged when we shoulda zagged… and what to do next. Funny how we think of these “eras” of our youth, when they were merely a matter of weeks.
