For someone untrained in the sweet science, Portland’s Sara Jackson-Holman sure knows how to land a one-two punch.

Thursday morning, USA Today‘s website debuted the video for Jackson-Holman’s breathtaking new single, “Freight Train;” that evening, the song was featured in Grey’s Anatomy’s season finale.

East Portland Blog caught up with the classically trained pianist-turned-pop chanteuse that night as she struggled to get ABC dialed in on her television. She doesn’t watch much TV, but tries to tune in when one of her songs accentuates a storyline. Over the last couple of years, there’s been several opportunities to do so: Bones, Castle, Switched At Birth… and “Freight Train” was the second SJH number to be featured in Grey’s Anatomy.

sarajacksonholman_coverart“I’m usually on my computer at the same time, and it’s exciting to see the people connecting to the song (online),” she said. “A lot of these TV shows mean a lot to some people… when “Into The Blue” was on a season finale of Castle, I saw how a lot of fans really related to it – ‘Oh, my gosh, this is Castle and Beckett’s song!’

“I think that’s really cool, to read someone else’s perspective of one of my songs,” Jackson-Holman added. “it’s interesting to see it in a different context… it’s my favorite part (of TV placement).”

Jackson-Holman’s own perspective is poignantly displayed in the video for “Freight Train,” directed by Dawn Jones of PDX-based Hearts + Sparks. A somber nod to the recitals that her late, cherished grandfather attended, the video is as unabashedly personal as the song — which was written shortly after his sudden passing.

“I thought the most genuine thing would be to just make (the video) completely for my grandpa,” she recalled. “The classical performance elements… since he always came and supported me with that, and then just dedicating it to him. He’d be excited by it, and I really like its simplicity.”

“Freight Train” is the third video from the Bend native’s album Cardiology, which still has plenty of gold to mine almost a year after it’s release. The singer says there might be another song or two on television this summer, while she’s busy performing on the West Coast. A fall tour of Europe is planned.
