As someone who makes it a point to attend every Gillian Gaar-related event I can, I was delighted to find her guesting on my ol’ pal Marco Collins‘ (relatively) new internet radio show on JetCityStream.com!
And as an inveterate listmaker, I was also very curious to hear how they’d break down "The 20 Best Nirvana Songs" herein, which is the feedback-drenched frosting atop a delicious aural cake, needless to say.
Since I read Gillian in Seattle’s famed music paper The Rocket for over 15 years before we actually met and became friends, I feel not the least bit self-conscious about enthusing o’er her books, of which ENTERTAIN US: THE RISE OF NIRVANA is the latest and–along with her essential 2010 Elvis tome, RETURN OF THE KING, and her pioneering 1992 study of the glorious history of women in Rock, SHE’S A REBEL–very likely the greatest!
By the by, the inclusion in the broadcast of Marco’s young protege and intense Nirvana fan, Gary Wilson, only adds to the spirited camaraderie of the occasion, as the two-plus hours simply fly by. So sit back and enjoy one of the finest pieces of Nirvana-based programming you’ll ever hear!
P.S. Just after the 1:12:00 mark, Marco mentions my old friends (and former Ein Heit bandmates) from Silkworm having provided the early dub of IN UTERO that he debuted on the air months ahead of its official release, a hilariously entertaining occasion at which I was present, on my sole visit to the offices of his former employer, 107.7 FM, "The End". And I’ll never forget the sheer relish with which Marco told us about the "cease and desist" order from DGC’s attorneys that had either just arrived at the station or was imminent! Great fun….
